Staffa Island, Scotland
We are currently working with the National Trust for Scotland on the Island of Staffa. Staffa is a remote and uninhabited island located off the Island of Mull in the Western Highlands of Scotland. The island is a NNR and SSSI site and famous for being the site of the legendary Fingal’s Cave, for its geological basal rock formation and its rich bird and marine life. On Staffa we were commissioned to design a new, safer staircase down to the cave and widen the jetty at which tourists disembark. We furthermore assisted the client with maintenance works such as repairs to footpaths and walkways. All the works involved complicated transport logistics, lifts and installation methodologies for a challenging remote and uninhabited site. Working closely with local stakeholders to learn traditional suitable methods and materials as well as the NTS’ specialist team has ensured that bio-security, archaeology, and health and safety are adhered to within the sensitive balancing of the island’s ecology with tourist access.
