We are Galmstrup, an RIBA Chartered London-based international practice of architects, planners and strategists with a strong Scandinavian DNA. Our work has a cultural, social and community emphasis, and our clients are predominantly in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

We live by the Danish saying Hænderne i Jorden (hands in the earth). For us every project deserves a new beginning, where we go back to first principles to search out the essence of place, people and purpose, before we draw. We walk the ground, feel the weather, breathe the air, and meet with people whose everyday reality, living, community, tradition and future it is. Our designs emerge as direct responses to what and who is there.

Galmstrup’s work in the civic sphere varies in type and scale from designing and building museums, galleries, archives and community centres, or the re-envisaging of existing heritage buildings, to the strategic masterplanning of cultural districts and entire wild natural landscapes.

With 20 years of international experience working on cultural projects as architects, planners and advisors, we are able to bring together and lead multidisciplinary design, consultancy and client teams, often in complex settings and on sensitive projects with high-profile stakeholders.

Services

Architecture - We design and deliver culture and community projects in sensitive setting’s and for challenging sites. We coordinate the design team and work hand-in-glove with our client and contractors delivering quality on time and to budget. We understand complex processes and deliver quality projects with people and a pragmatic midset.

Strategic (Master)planning - We work with cultural institutions and national organisations, governments and councils, local communities and private developers, to set their projects within a long-term framework. We initiate projects through engagement identifying core purpose and directions. We drive projects forward form ideas to implementation defining priorities and parameters, examine context conditions and shape narratives and visual identity. We create plans for historic and new urban areas, heritage sites and natural landscapes. Our (master)plans range from loose “what-if” concepts to detailed, multi-layered appraisals and proposals ensuring long-term sustainable places for and with people.
