Creating the illusion of daylight.

Royal Watercolour Society Gallery
Trafalgar Square, London
380m2 / Gallery and Archive

A fit-out proposal for a new gallery and archive spanning over two stories in a Grade II listed building in the heart of London.

The illusion of daylight was used throughout the scheme as a driving element to make the low space feel more generous. The ground floor suggests a combined cafe, boutique and workshop area with a large recessed ceiling, providing a changing light throughout the day to create an illusion of a natural skylight. In the basement, two significant semi-cylindrical vaults are used as gallery space and with a recessed ceiling light to lift the space and allow an even light to the exhibition walls.
